With the ease of travel restrictions amid the pandemic, more and more travelers are applying for a UK visa.
In 2022 alone, the United Kingdom received over 31 million visitors from all over the world, contributing to a 40 percent increase in the UK’s GDP from 2020. Over 370,000 of these visitors were from the UAE.
A popular destination for tourism, education, and business, the UK gives travelers the chance to explore its rich history, study at its world-renowned universities, or participate in business engagements.
But before you can fly to the UK, you first need to acquire the right visit visa.
This article aims to help you understand the different kinds of UK visas available, their eligibility criteria, required documents, application processes, fees, and status-tracking procedures. Read on to learn more.
The UK Visa Waiver Program and ETA
Before we go into the most common kinds of UK visas, it’s important to consider that not all based in Dubai may necessarily need one.
If you are a GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) national or a citizen of Jordan, then you are eligible for a UK ETA (electronic travel authorisation). GCC member nations include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The ETA has replaced the UK visa waiver program, which allowed GCC nationals to visit the UK without securing a traditional UK visa for short stays. Currently, Jordanian citizens can also already apply for a UK ETA.
You should apply for an ETA if you are visiting the UK for no longer than six months for purposes such as tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or short-term studies.
As the UK rolls out the ETA program, more eligible nationalities can apply. Eventually, citizens from UK visa-exempt countries such as Canada, USA, and Australia will need to apply for an ETA. Visit gov.uk for the latest list of ETA-eligible countries.
If you are based in Dubai but are not a GCC or Jordanian national, then you must apply for a UK visa online or via a British embassy/consulate. Read on to learn more about your visa options.
Types of UK Visas
The first step in the application process is determining which type of UK visa you need. The following are some of the most common UK visa categories that Dubai residents can apply for:
- Standard Visitor Visa: The standard visitor visa allows you to perform leisure activities, visit family and friends in the UK, engage in business activities, or go on short-term studies.
- Work Visa: If you plan on working in the UK, you will need to apply for a work visa. There are different types of work visas depending on your job, duration of stay, and employer sponsorship in the UK.
- Student Visa: If you’re planning to study in the UK, you’ll need a Student Visa (Travelers used to refer to it as the Tier 4 Visa). This visa allows you to study at educational institutions in the UK.
- Family Visa: If you are reuniting with a family member who is a UK resident, you will need to apply for a Family Visa.
- Transit Visa: If you will pass through the UK on your way to another country, you may need a Transit Visa.

- Online Application: Visit the official UK government website and access the UK visa application page. Indicate the UAE as the country where you will be providing your biometrics. You can choose to locate the nearest UK VAC or an alternate location. If applying through a UK VAC is not possible, consult the nearest British embassy or consulate.
- Booking an Appointment: There are eight UK visa application centers (VACs) in the UAE. Book an appointment at the available UK VAC in Dubai and select a date and time. The Dubai VAC is located at WAFI Mall, Level 3, Falcon, Phase 2, Umm Hurair 2, Dubai, UAE. Submission hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday, while passport collection hours are from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. only. There is a break for prayer between 12:20 to 2:20 p.m. every Friday.
- Preparing for the Appointment: Ensure you have all necessary documents.
Attending the Appointment: Arrive on time. Hand over your documents to the visa officer, and provide your fingerprints and passport-sized photographs for the biometric data collection. - Visa application fees and payment: There are two fees commonly included when you apply for a UK visa: the visa application fee and service fees. The visa application fee varies depending on the visa, while service fees are additional charges. Most UK visas are commonly paid online with a credit or debit card. Some VACs, meanwhile, allow payment during your appointment. You may also want to avail of courier services for the return of your passport and documents.
- Post-Appointment: Once you’ve completed the procedure at the VAC, it’s time to wait. Processing times can vary.
Meanwhile, non-UAE residents obtaining a UK ETA can visit the EVS platform. It’s a digital one-stop shop that simplifies the ETA application process so they can focus on preparing for their journey instead of going through complex visa processes.
